Construction Technician I
Location: Rochester Hills, MI

SUMMARY: Possesses knowledge of utility construction and understanding of engineering Standard Details for sanitary sewer, storm sewer, water-main and concrete/bituminous paving construction. Also must be skilled in the use of Fieldbook software and use of laptop for composing technician daily reports. Responsible for representing SDA and our clientele in a professional, knowledgeable manner.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities  and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications on simple sewer, water and paving projects and/or to assist a senior Construction Technician on more complex projects.
  • Must have the ability to learn: Use a transit and level to check line and grade.
  • Witness and interpret density, proctor, bituminous and concrete testing of materials.
  • Witness final project tests such as pressure, purification, infiltration and TV inspection.
  • Understand contract pay items and relate them to the work being performed.
  • Keep accurate daily reports and quantities for the project.
  • Understand methods of construction procedures and work with the owner, engineer, public and contractor to resolve minor situations.

Other Skills & Abilities 

  • Ability to supervise subordinate technicians, through knowledge of construction techniques and procedures for complex projects.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings required.
  • Experience with Fieldbook software: Must be capable of using software for daily entry of observation notes, diagrams, photos and other information required for documentation of field activity.
  • Must possess a valid drivers’ license and maintain a driving record in accordance with SDA policy requirements

Education & Experience Guidelines 
Education:   High school graduate; Associates degree in construction field may substitute as a portion of practical experience requirement. Possession of a Certificate of Completion of an approved construction inspection program, or possession of a certification for concrete, aggregate or bituminous testing is helpful, but not a requirement.

Experience:   Two (2) years experience in engineering/surveying field. Construction experience of the same type and scope may be considered if it demonstrates skill and knowledge necessary to perform the functions of the position.

Project Manager - Transportation (Highways and Roads)

SUMMARY: This position requires an energetic, self-directed engineer/manager to supervise and perform engineering work relating to the design and construction of civil transportation projects. This individual will determine the scope of the work involved and plan, conduct, and supervise the engineering work of the project team. The successful candidate must enjoy solving engineering problems and challenges in a collaborative environment, while professionally managing financial budgets, schedules and maintaining client satisfaction. Excellent communications skills and a positive attitude toward building relationships is a must.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities  and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide senior-level technical expertise on freeway and non-freeway design projects associated with conceptual engineering, detailed engineering designs, and preparation of contracts for construction of State and Local Agency projects.
  • Coordinate design development and/or provide technical direction to define the scope of projects.
  • Coordinate various engineering tasks, including structural, traffic, hydraulic/hydrology, construction, surveying and other disciplines.
  • Supervise, mentor and delegate to Project Engineers and Technicians on a design team.
  • Responsible for quality control in all aspects of the structural design, including review and checking of engineering work completed by others.
  • Coordinate with clients to assure their needs are met by defining work programs and budgets, providing leadership in project planning and strategy including general oversight and planning, project management, project implementation, and ensuring quality of work products.

Survey Technician / Instrument Operator / Assistant
Location: Rochester Hills, MI and San Antonio TX

SUMMARY: The primary purpose of this position is to help our Field Crew Chiefs, in both our Michigan and Texas office locations, in any and all aspects of field work.

Project Engineer - Traffic
Location: Rochester Hills, MI

SUMMARY: The successful candidate will have extensive experience in traffic engineering field, on such projects as traffic operations studies, preparing work zone traffic staging and traffic control plans, writing specifications for implementation of traffic control, traffic impact studies, environmental impact assessments, parking studies, and be proficient with current design and analysis technology.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities  and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Monitor and coordinate simultaneous project tasks within deadlines and assigned budgets, working closely with other team members
  • Advise junior staff Engineers and Designers in the production of traffic engineering products
  • Independently perform, under general supervision, standard traffic engineering work requiring application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related traffic engineering tasks
  • Exercise judgment on details of work when less common or proposed methods or procedures are necessary
  • Understand and detect potential conflicts with the interrelationship between construction methodology and practical traffic control staging
  • Handle specific traffic engineering aspects on highway projects; ensure completeness and accuracy of traffic control plans and specifications
  • Quality control in all aspects of the traffic engineering tasks
  • Determine scope of work and estimate hours for traffic engineering tasks as part of an overall proposal and contract, or for individual traffic engineering projects
  • Use working knowledge of traffic simulation and analysis in HCS 2000, Synchro, Corsim, VISSIM and latest technology
  • Write engineering reports, studies, and specifications
  • Use state of the art design technology and functionality within Microstation V8i, and other software common to the development of transportation projects
  • Helping to maintain sound client relations; satisfy client requirements
  • Maintaining good employee relations and project communication
  • Participate in and represent company at professional association events and technical societies

Education & Experience Guidelines
REQUIRED: Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering and Michigan Professional Engineer license
Preferred: PTOE Certification

  • Minimum 10 years of practical experience
  • Experience preparing MDOT traffic control plans required
  • Experience preparing Traffic Impact Studies and Operational Analyses preferred

  • Provide senior-level technical expertise on bridge projects associated with conceptual engineering, detailed engineering designs, and preparation of contracts for construction of State and Local Agency projects.
  • Perform structural analysis using most current technologies, design and detailing of highway and railroad bridges and other transportation related structures, such as sound barriers or retaining walls, and providing complete design efforts with minimal direction.
  • Coordinate design development and/or assist in providing technical direction to define the scope of projects.
  • Supervise, mentor and delegate to Project Engineers and Technicians on a design team.
  • Responsible for quality control in all aspects of the structural design, including review and checking of engineering work completed by others.
  • Perform bridge structural inspection.
  • Working closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects.
  • Coordinate with clients to define work programs and budgets, provide leadership in project planning and strategy including general oversight and planning, project management, project implementation, and ensuring quality of work products.

  • At least 10 years of practical structural engineering design experience, including MDOT project experience, with a minimum of two years of project management experience required.
  • NBIS Certification for Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges required.

Project Engineer - Water Resources
Location: Rochester Hills, MI

SUMMARY: Spalding DeDecker Associates, Inc. seeks a Project Engineer - Water Resources to:

  • Prepare floodplain reviews, FEMA reports and documents for CLOMRs and LOMRs, and all phases of NPDES permitting, including annual site reviews
  • Perform hydraulic & hydrologic analysis utilizing various software including HEC-RAS, HEC-HIMS, XPSWMM, PCSWMM, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

RPLS / Survey Project Manager
Location: San Antonio, TX

SUMMARY: Spalding DeDecker Associates (SDA) is an employee owned surveying and civil engineering firm of around 100 employees with offices in Michigan and Texas. We are expanding and looking to grow further into the Texas market (San Antonio area) and are looking for both an experienced Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS) and an ambitious, newly licensed RPLS (or within a year of obtaining) to join our team.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities  and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Supervising, coordinating and reviewing the activities of field and office staff
  • Supervising the preparation and completion of all survey deliverables
  • Work closely with survey director and engineering staff to ensure coordination

  • Provide leadership, direction and motivation to staff
  • Survey calculation and legal research
